Aging in Ohio: Population Age 65+ 2000 and 2010 by County

The number of residents age 65 and older in Ohio’s Delaware County has increased by 83% from the year 2000 to 2010. This change is part of a broader dramatic aging story taking place across Ohio’s eighty-eight counties according to information being released this week by Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University. Delaware County represents the most substantial aging that took place over this period as Ohio’s total population age 65 and older grew by 7.6%. Washington County also represents a unique age related change as it got smaller and older. The county underwent significant growth in the number of residents over the age of 65 (a 15% increase) but unlike Delaware, Washington County shrunk in overall population from 2000 to 2010. This information released this week is part of a series of forthcoming reports depicting how Ohio is aging at the county level as Scripps Gerontology Center seeks to shed light on age related issues in the state.
